May 3 2006 - Long time no news. We've been mostly using MySapce to communicate with our legions of fans. After a long hiatus for Miso's wedding, my travels, etc., we are getting ready to do some recording and lots of shows. Look for news soon.

January 15, 2006 - SunRadio has built a new recording studio! We're getting some great sounds out of it. Look for new songs soon!

January 2006 - Three months since the last update. Oh well. We've been working on recording some new songs. Drums in Sean's studio, the rest in Miso's i-mac. We're also trying to build our own little studio here. All the recording equipment and most of the drum set have been delivered from the U.S. and now it's all being put together so we can get all 20 of our original tunes on CD and get them out to clubs and hopefully record companies. Another reason we've been slackers about this site is that we have been pointing everyone to our site at Myspace. The beauty of that is that we can post songs for you to hear there. Click on it and check it out. Hmmm what else?....

at Club Hong

October 7 - In a last minute show, SunRadio was booked to play at Club Hong in Hongdae. Hong is the new club started by very successful composer/songwriter for the pop stars of Korea. The promising party started off with a nice mix of a couple of Korea's lovely young pop stars and music industry in-crowd. After our second set, a stick in the mud crowd of foreigners from Ilsan rolled in and couldn't figure out how to hold a drink and listen to music at the same time. They opted for holding the back bar up. Our lamest crowd yet. Can't blame it on the music. We had our best sound and light system yet and by all accounts the show was tight.

September 26 - If you missed the Friday the 16th show at Club FF, you missed a wild one. Probably our most jam-packed show yet and for sure our craziest. People jumping on the stage, commandeering the mic, stage diving, crowd surfing, knocking over the drums. This was the show where everybody remembered how you're supposed to behave at a rock show. Even the Koreans in the audience got off their hineys and shook 'em. A legendary show (for us). If anyone has pictures from this show please send us a few for our homepage. Thanks to FF for the free drinks and free admission for foreigners as a Chuseok gift.

Last Saturday on the 24th, we had a great time at J Bar with Jet Echo and Up at Sunrise. Despite a few techincal difficulties with pedals and little glitch in a brand new song the vibe was good and the crowd was fun. Great music by the other bands too.

The Saturday, Sept. 3 show at Big Electric Cat in Itaewon- Rock & Roll. Drama. Debauchery. Hot Irish girls. If you weren't there you missed out. Thanks to Al for sitting in on the wine bottle and making sure the drums and walls were sturdy enough. Thanks to the Cat for the fun venue.

Also in Sept. - Miso and Matty both won slots in the Rocky Mountain Tavern final acoustic singer songwriter competition. Both went up against 7 or so talented as hell singers and songwriters in a very packed house on different nights, doing kick ass performances of 3 unplugged original songs each. Miso played three SunRadio songs on the 9th and Matty did three of his originals on the 23rd. Miso swept up, getting a whopping 29/30 points from the judges. Way to go bro. Look for Miso and Matty in the final competition on Friday the 30th. Check out more about the event on Liza's blog.

the belly dancers

July 20 - It's hard to say which of the last three SR shows was more fun, more unusual or wildest. The fundraiser for bh productions (a local theatre troupe) at Bar Nana was jam packed, hot and sweaty - the way a rock show should be. This was definitely our most dancingest crowd. And thanks to the DJ, the little improvisational set-intro jam with some funky rythm tracks sounded worthy of a band kicking off a stadium show. One of our best shows yet for sure.

The next show at the Cat for the United Planet/WaveAid tsunami relief fundraiser was a hoot too. The event raised more the 6,000,000 won (over $6,000) to help send a bunch of folks to southern Thailand to help rebuild. Thanks to Kate for the bottle of tequila - tho it didn't help our playing much. ;)

Our last show for July and possibly our most interesting (til now and possibly ever) was the groovy Sungshin Women's University graduation party for the young ladies who studied event planning at the school. This was their final project and it rocked. Set in the tony Chung Dam Dong hood in Seoul (French bistros, exclusive clubs, movies stars, etc) this party featured, besides all the lovely students and organizers of the party, about 15 smoking hot belly dancers. We're honored and lucky to have been chosen to play and impressed by the great party (who wouldn't be impressed by a party of 90% gorgeous young ladies!?). Thanks to Club Goks for setting up the audition.

July 4 - Thanks to Liza Lebeda, the multi-talented photographer and party scene hipstress for the cool photo session with the band. Look for her photos of SunRadio in future magazines and Seoul scene stories. And check out her tres chic seoulstyle.com if you want to know what and who's hot in Seoul these days.

July 3 - Crazy weekend. How many bands ever play 4 concerts in 2 nights? Friday night at Funky Funky with Jet Echo and the Penetrators and then over to J Bar for a late night show, again with Jet Echo. Thanks to Lewis at Funky for the two free bottles of tequila.

Saturday night, a big show with Jet Echo and Kunga Drummers at the Cat and a late night stint at J Bar. One of the most tiring weekends this year for SunRadio. Thanks to Don for the projected visuals and hopefully for the DVD of the Cat show.

June 27 - Just got back from our second Gwangju show at Goks. We had another good weekend there even though the turnout was kind of low. We had lots of competition though - the big annual Canada Day party was going off in Seoul, and tropical beaches and hometowns were more important to lots of the university teachers who were finished with school already. Hopefully it wasn't because we sucked last time. Anyway, seems like the folks who did make it had a good time and some people who saw both shows said we were sounding tighter. We're looking forward to more shows at Goks in the future...

Sound Day Crowd Official Sound Day Photo
June 15 - June 8 was the band's first Sound Day performance in Hongdae. The 10 p.m. set at Funky Funky was a little early but the place was packed and jumping about halfway through the hour long set. The crowd of mostly first time listeners and a few old friends and fans were treated to a couple of brand new songs. A very long night of drinking for Brandon's birthday party ensued after the show. High on the adrenaline of Friday night's show, the band crashed several Itaewon bars on Saturday looking for a place to share the love and the music. After much cajoling and shameless begging, the Big Electric Cat relented and 1975 graciously let us take their stage and we were granted a 3 song set. We must have done something right, because that was upgraded to a 4 song set, then 5 and then 6 as the show went on. Thanks again to the Cat. We promise we'll actually try to book the next gig.

Gwangju at Goks Bar April
April 24- SunRadio's funnest weekend as a band to date was just had in Gwangju. A somewhat puzzled audience wondered what the hell they were in for - paying a 10,000 cover in a grungy little bar they'd never heard of for a bunch of music by bands they'd never heard of in a concert of rock music by foreigners, also probably never heard of in Gwangju. A few decided to leave before we got started but those who decided to stay gave us the show of our short little career. Whether we were good or not I can't say but we had a freakin' blast playing for that rowdy and energetic crowd. The electricity was pumping in that place. Just ask Matty. Barefeet, spilled beer, and high voltage don't mix. Besides the near electrocution of the bass player, it was more fun than any of our 10 or 15 shows in Seoul and we're already looking forward to our next show in Gwangju at Goks. So thanks if you were part of it and thanks to Don Gyu for getting us the use of Goks.

The following day, we attending the annual riverside picnic in memory of Don Kyu's daughter Sunny. When I found the old man (hehe) sitting alone looking pensive, he said, "hey... annual indie rock festival right here.. for Sunny.. I'm going to start looking into it". If you know this energetic entrepreneur, you know he may very well happen.

April 9- It's been one of the rainiest days Seoul has seen in a long time and we just got out of a great afternoon in Studio Alley where we recorded most of the tracks for 4 songs. After a couple of more trips to different studios for vocals, more guitar tracks, some mixing and some mastering, we feel like we're going to have a kick ass little demo on our hands. We had set the whole afternoon aside to record only the drum tracks but everything clicked along so smoothly we got most of the rest done. Can't wait to hear the final version. Alley is a great little studio.

At SH Club
April 6- We just finished a very fun gig last night (April 5). It was the Lifeline fundraiser indie-rock festival for suicide prevention at Club SH in Daehakno. After auditioning on a whim on the 3rd we got the closing slot, ie "Headliners". The venue was sweltering and people were just about passing out from the heat. According to trusted friends and fans we had our best set yet. Miso got some white noise action to close down one tune, Brandon's usually contorted drumming face had some thinking he was posing as a punk rocker, and Matty wandered around the huge stage like he had Alzheimer's or something. We tried to ignore the festival's rule for a 25 minute set but after our allotted 5 or 6 songs organizers looked like they were about to pull the plug so we gave in. If the audience had any say, we would've been playing another hour....

History

SunRadio is a three-piece indie-rock band formed in late 2004 by Miso Gogh, Brendan Behan and Matty "Highlife" Money in Seoul. Gogh and Behan (and the talented Vadim on bass) had played most of the year in the band the Squids, which was formed mainly as an outlet for Gogh's catchy, tuneful indie pop rock songs. The Squids performed often around Seoul, for Korean audiences in the underground rock clubs of the Hongdae area and for the mostly ex-pat crowds in grungy Itaewon.

In a December personnel change, Money was tapped as bassist and the band picked up where the Squids left off and Gogh started writing more and edgier songs. After a slow early winter 2005 (hectic work schedules and extended vacations) the band got serious about practicing and performing in March. Their biggest gig yet came when they were invited to play a fund raiser for a Korean orphanage organized by Work and Play, a Seoul-based website that caters to expats. Despite a short (faulty rented amps, not beer bottles) the packed house gave the band a warm reception.

The next chance to play came after reading about an indie rock festival in the newspaper. The band auditoned and were chosen to fill the closing slot for the 2-day festival in April. Playing to a room full of sweaty Korean teens and a small entourage of foreign friends and fans, the band had their best sounding and best recieved show yet. As well as their first whiff of Asian pop idol mania as fans asked for photos with the band and went giddy as they "left the building."

The band is now practicing for upcoming shows and mixing a 4-song demo CD due out by the end of April - uh.. May... uh, I mean June.. could be July - make that September.

Miso Gogh (vocals, guitars, composer, writer) hails from Kitchener/Waterloo, Canada, where he played and wrote with the Continentals and Stereo in the Park (currently known as the Miniatures). When not writing songs or performing with SunRadio he dabbles in acting, and voice work in Seoul. He currently resides in Seoul with SunRadio #1 fan Michelle and their pets Pants and Asia.

Brandon at J Bar
Brendan Behan (drums, facial contortions) comes from the Heart of Dixie where he played in art and indie rock bands (the Others, Them Thievin' Crows) in his college days. He currently lives in Seoul (alone, ladies.)

Matty at Alley Studio
Matty "Highlife" Money (bass, backing vocals) comes from the tiny nook of Orangeville, Canada. Dragged kicking and screaming from his country/acoustic roots into the plateau that is rock'n'roll, he has put down his six string for the four and fuzz. His musical history includes a list of small projects such as the ever not popular "aquaintences". Finally, finding himself in the right place at the right time he's keeping it simple with SunRadio.
